He was born on 17 February 1819, Lanarkshire, Scotland.3,1 He was baptized on 12 March 1819 at Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 He was baptized on 12 March 1818 at Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scotland. according to an alternative Baptism index entry.4 It was incorrectly recorded that James Gardiner was born circa 1831 at Scotland since he claimed to be 60 in the 1891 census.5 James married Mary Jane Tudor Marks before 1853.6,7,8,5
James Archibald Gairdiner died on 27 January 1899, Bayfield, Stanley Twp., Huron County, Ontario, Canada at age 79 according to Ontario Death Registration 011791.3
The informant on his death registration was his attending physician, Wm Pallister.3
James Archibald Gairdiner was buried on 31 January 1899 at Bayfield Cemetery, Stanley Twp., Huron County, Ontario Canada.9,10
John (sic) Archibald was a beneficiary in the will of Thomas Gairdner on 6 January 1840.2
James and Marey Gardner appeared on the 1861 United Province of Canada Census of Stanley Twp., Huron County, Ontario, enumerated 13 January 1861. James was described as a merchant. Their children, Sharlotte, Catherin and Robert, were listed as living with them. Rob't Gardner, an M.D. and brother of James, was also included in the houesshold. Note that age is given as the next birthday, and households were not explicitly identified.11
James and Mary J. Gairdner appeared on the 1871 Canadian Census of Stanley Twp., Huron County, Ontario, enumerated 2 April 1871. James was described as a merchant. Their children, Charlotte, Kate, Robt H., Mary, John, Ann H. and Charles, were listed as living with them.12

Their children, Catherine, Mary Tudor, John, Margerette and Charley, were listed as living with them. While all of their ages were understated, I know this is the correct family since James is described as the postmaster during the period that we know for "our" James Gairdner.5
James Gairdner was postmaster of Bayfield from 1853 to 14 Feb 1896, when he resigned. He was followed by his daughters: Mary Tudor Gairdner (01 Apr 1896 to 21 Oct 1905) until her death and Margerette Gairdner (11 Nov 1905 to 28 June 1917) when she resigned.13
The following obituary appeared in the newspaper The Clinton New Era published in Clinton, Ontario 2 February 1899:
In the obituary of Robert Hutchinson Fortesque Gairdner who died 25 December 1931, his parents, an unknown person were listed as surviving him.14

He was for many years postmaster and in the early days of Baylield was one of its most enterprising business men. Paralysis was the cause of his death. Two of his family are ministers of the gospel and one a doctor, while another has fulfilled the dnties of deputy postmaster. Two daughters also survive. "His father Thomas Gairdner of Mid Nemphlar signed a ’Settlement’ (effectively his Will’ on 6 January 1840 and included a legacy “To my son John Alexander Gairdner the sum of £40 Sterling “
(Note it was important to specify Sterling as opposed to Scots).
There are legacies also to his children John Archibald, David, Robert, Mary, Beatrix and Catherine. Thomas states that the other children have had their share.
His son Thomas Gairdner is mentioned as having responsibilty for making up any defficiencies if the net value of the estate is nt sufficient
NOTE Scottish Wills only covered moveable property so there is no mention of any property. The Gairdner land was sold in 1857 for £5100 - reported in newspapers".
