Mother*Jennie Allan1

Viola was born before 1908.1 Viola married James Kerr in 1922.1
Viola Sousterwas referenced in the biographical information that appeared about Ed Souster and Jennie Allan in 1982 in the book The Asquith Record, Asquith, Saskatchewan, CanadaG,[: :CR:]
Ed Souster
Ed Souster was born in Manitoba in 1882. He was the sixth child of John and Harriet Souster, who had previously moved from Ontario. Ed had four brothers, Bill, Tom, Ernie, Wally and thee sisters, Eliza, Janet and Lilly. They grew up in the farming community of Glenburnie, Man. and during the summer months the boys played baseball and soccer. Ed was a talented baseball pitcher and turned down an opportunity to play professional ball.

Ed married Jennie Allan, also of Glenburnie, in Brandon, Man. in 1905. In 1908, Ed, Jennie and their baby daughter Viola moved to Saskatchewan and took out a homestead about five miles northeast of Asquith. They resided with Ed's sister Janet and her husband Tom Grasby until their house was ready. It consisted of one large room at first and they added onto it as time went by. Around the same time Ed's parents, brothers and sisters, except Eliza, moved to the Asquith area.

Ed and Jennie raised four children, Margaret, their second daughter, born in 1920 was followed by Irene in 1913 and myself (Earle) in 1918. All of the children were born at home. Mother was a real homemaker. She also raised turkeys, ducks and chickens, besides helping to milk cows. Berry picking was one of her favourite pastimes. Over the years Mother boarded 11 school teachers.

Dad also contributed a great deal to making his homestead into a farm he could be proud of. During the years that followed he added three quarter sections of land. Dad was a real lover of horses and never quite adjusted to modem machinery. Sports days provided him with an opportunity to continue to enjoy baseball, although caring for the farm kept him from regular play.

The children attended Grasby School which was located one mile east of home. We attended church whenever possible and at times services were held in the Grasby School. The annual Christmas concert held in the school was always a happy and enjoyable event

The dry thirties were particularly difficult on the sandy land, but they continued in the dairy business until they retired in 1944. They spent their retirement years in Asquith and in 1955 celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Dad passed away in 1964 and Mother followed in 1970.

In 1922 Viola married James Kerr and they moved to North Bay. Ont They have ten children, five boys. Allan, Ted, Bill, Bruce and Jim and five girls, Frances, Marjorie. Marion, Irene and Joyce.

Margaret married Odin Dahlseide in 1929. They farmed in the Asquith area for many years before refiring to North Bay, Ont. Odin passed away in October, 1980. They had one daughter, Audrey. Audrey married Ian Townson. They have five children, all living in North Bay, Ont.

In 1936 Irene married Lloyd Haanen. They have three children. Leslie, Gloria and Ken. Irene and Lloyd have farmed in the Asquith district for many years and are still living on the original homestead.

I (Earle) Joined the R.C.A.F. in 1941 and served over-seas during World War II. After the war, I returned to Asquith and in 1946 married Olive Saul of Grandora. We moved to the home farm and lived there for four years. In 1951 we moved to Saskatoon where I worked eight years for the C.N.R. before joining Transport Canada where I have worked for 22 years. Olive and I have four children. Bill. Diane, Debbie and Janet. Bill has a degree in Agriculture with a Masters degree in Soil Science. He is employed by the Federal Government the University of Saskatchewan. He married Donna Byggdin and they have four children. three boys and one girl. Diane graduated as a physiotherapist. She married Doug Robinson and they have two children, a boy and a girl. Doug is a resource officer with DNS and they live a Smeaton, Sask. Debbie is teaching school in Saskatoon. She married Gordon Hargreaves and they have one child, a boy. Janet. our youngest, is at home and attends elementary school.1
