     William was born on 1 June 1863 in Germany.1,5,6 William married Ann Louisa Biesenthal on 11 May 1887 in Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church (Locksley), Alice Twp., Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada, according to Ontario Marriage Registration 010705.7,3,4,1 The informant on his death registration was his son, Albert Hartwig.6 He died on 22 January 1908 in Lot 24-25, Conc 13, Wilberforce Twp., Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada, at age 44.8,9,5,6,10 William Hartwig was buried in St. Luke's Lutheran Cemetery, Eganville, Grattan Twp., Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada.5
     William Hartwig was also known as William Hartwick according to the Eganville Leader, reporting at the time of his death.8,11 William Hartwig was also known as Wilhelm Julius Hartwig.5,10,12 He immigrated in 1885 to Canada from Germany, according to the 1901 census.1 He was naturalized in 1900 in Canada.1
     The following newspaper article appeared in in the book Reflections of a Century compiled by the Eganville Leader (2002) in Eganville in Ontario originally published 24 January 1908 :
The startling news reached Eganville at six o'clock last evening that William Hartwick, a respected German farmer of the Township of Wilberforce, living four miles distant from Eganville, was killed by a falling pine. The circumstances surrounding this sad event are as follows: The unfortunate victim was making wood on his own premises - only about 200 hundred yards distant from his house. Three of his children were with him. A stunted pine was standing, and Hartwick decided to burn it down. He set fire to it, failing to note, however, that it was only a shell. He resumed his wood cutting, when, without warning, the burning pine crashed down upon him, striking him on the head and inflicting such injuries as to cause death 15 minutes later.9

     Wilhelm Hartwig was recorded as father of the bride at the marriage of August Hermann Mueller and Marie Wilhelmine Hartwig on 4 October 1922.13
     Wilhelm Hartwig was recorded as the father of the bridegroom at the marriage of William Hartwig and Laura Louisa Mueller on 25 October 1922.14
