The following obituary appeared in the newspaper The Leader-Post published in Regina, Saskatchewan 6 December 1937:
JOHN S. RIDDELL IS DEAD FROM PNEUMONIA
Well-Known Frobisher Business Man Will Be Buried Tuesday
(Special Despatch) ALAMEDA, Sask., Dec. 6.-John Samuel Riddell, one of the best known business men of the southeast section of the province, and an active church worker at Frobisher for the past 36 years, died Sunday in Estevan hospital from pneumonia.
Funeral services will be held from Frobisher United church Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, with burial in Frobisher cemetery.
Mr. Riddell is survived by his widow, three daughters, Mrs. C. V. Pickard, Exeter, Ont; Mrs. A. C. Sweet, Frobisher, and Mrs. W. H. Waddell, Winnipeg; and one son, Flight Lieut. W. I. Riddell, R.C.A.M., Vancouver.
Mr. Riddell was born near St. Mary's, Ontario, in 1864. In 1888 he came west, being in the employ of the C.P.R. at Kenmar, Ontario. In 1893 he married Miss Lavina Irwin at Keewatin, Ont. They then lived at Pipestone, Man., and later at Alameda, Sask., until 1901, when Mr. Riddell opened the first business, a general store, at Frobisher. He was actively engaged in this business until a few days before his death.
Mr. Riddell for 35 years was superintendent of the Sunday school at Frobisher and one of the most energetic workers in the United States. From his business connections Mr. Riddell was known throughout the whole of southeast Saskatchewan and southwest Manitoba, a man who worked for the betterment of the community in which he lived, and who leaves a host of friends who will regret his death.4

In the obituary of Lavina Riddell, who died 25 July 1944, her husband, John Samuel Riddell, was listed as predeceased.9
Note regarding John Samuel Riddell and Walter R. Riddell by Rick Moffat, October 2025: I have added the family of John Samuel Riddell in the event that future research may establish a link between the Riddell family of Frosbisher and dad's Uncle Walter R. Riddell and his wife, Janet Moffat. Interest evolved from a portrait of John's daughter "Alma" Riddell being among grandma Moffat's photgraps and portraits.10
