Retirement Ends Long Career For "War Horse Of The Skies"
CONCLUDING a long and successful career which earned him the title of the "war horse of the skies," Wing Commander William I. Riddell has retired from active service in the Royal Canadian Air Force.
Officer commanding No. 7. Bombing and Gunnery school near Dauprin (sic), he relinquishes his post to Group Capt. W. E. Dipple, Royal Air Force, who has been chief flying trainer at No. 4 Air Training Command, Calgary, for the last year.
Wing Commander Riddell first handled the joy stick of a plane when he was 18, and his retirement marks the end of 24 years' first-rate flying during the most important years of development of aviation in Canada and the world.
Born in Alameda, Sask., in 1899, he is a product of Western Canada, gaining his education at Frobisher, Sask., Moose Jaw, Regina and Winnipeg.
Back In 1919
When 17 he joined the 249th Battalion from Regina and a year later transferred to the Flying Corps in France.
In 1919, with his heart still in the clouds, he returned to Canada, only to find there were no aviation jobs then.
In 1925 he was given a permanent commission in the R.C.A.F. and his first job was on fire patrol in the High River district.
Flying Instructor
His career from 1928 on included postings at Camp Borden as chief flying instructor, special courses at the Central Flying school of the R.A.F. in England and at the Royal Military staff college in Kingston and commissions at Rockcliffe, near Ottawa, and Vancouver.
In 1931 during the TransCanada air pageant with the R.C.A.F. he earned the name of "war horse of the skies" by his skill and hair-raising manoeuvres (sic) in putting a Siskin through its paces.
He took command of No. 7 B. and G. school at Dauphin in August, 1941. Poor health, however, forced him to take a month's leave of absence in the fall, and was responsible for his retirement early this year.8
