A Tribute To a Son and Brother
By Richard Horn
We are filled with sorrow this tragic day,
That death has struck in this horrible way.
To take a brother so dear to us all
So he left in peace, to answer God's call.
An honor was paid to him this day,
When a priest, came to bless him from far away,
And a sigh of relief had filled the air,
As we bowed our heads in solemn prayer.
Oh! Mother don't cry, for all's for the best,
For your son is not dead, but at peaceful rest.
And sunshine will brighten your life of tomorrow,
To lighten your burden, and lessen your sorrow.
Life on earth is not for long,
But just a test to know right from wrong,
And he made the highest of this test,
He treated them all with his earthly best.2

BOY DROWNED In River Sunday While Playing with Companions Many hearts were made sad Sunday afternoon when it was learned that Francis Liddle was drowned in the Ohio river at the south end of the sandbar on the Kentucky side. This was only the second time that Francis had went down to the river this season. He, with other boys, were in bathing and seeing a log floating by stopped the log and were riding it in the water when he fell off and went down. The other boys tried to rescue him, but owing to his frantic efforts and the depth of the water they were unable to get him to land. Where he went down seems to be a very dangerous place, as a son of George Kunz was drowned in the same place a few years ago. Francis was the son of Frank and Louise Liddle and was born in Lawrenceburg July 13, 1908. He graduated from the eighth grade at St. Lawrence school last year, after which he took a position with the Frolicher Shoe Company where he has since worked and is known at the plant as one among its most faithful employes. He has made his home with this aunt, Barbara Schnetzger in Newtown liking Lawrenceburg better than Cincinnati where his mother resides, His father having preceded him in death. He is survived by two brothers, Charles and Louis, and one sister Louise. After three days of anxious watching, his body was picked up at aPtriot (sic), Ind., just before noon yesterday, twenty-five miles below where he was drowned: Funeral services at St. Lawrence church this morning at 9 o'clock. Rev. Wm. Kries officiating. His classmates will act as Mass Servers and pallbearers. Interment in Greendale cemetery.4

RIVER TAKES TOLL
Newtown Boy Drowns Sunday On Kentucky Shore. While swimming in the Ohio River on Sunday afternoon, with several of his companions, Francis F. Liddle, who made his home with his aunt, Barbara Schnetger, in Newtown was drowned.
The boy and one of his chums intended to take the "Meet the Boat Trip" down the river Sunday morning, but changed their minds.
In the afternoon, some of his companions and he, decided to go swimming. The river being rather high, considerable drift was running and the boy got on a log which started to carry him down stream and, it is thought, he either jumped or fell off. His companions hurried to his rescue but were unable to save him. When the news reached the city, people hurried to the scene, and every effort was made then, by diving and dragging, to recover the body.
A reward of $100 was offered for the recovery of the body.
Francis Liddle was 15 years of age, the son of Frank Liddle, deceased, and a grandson of Isaac Liddle. His mother, was Miss Louise Schnetzger, is remarried and lives in Cincinnati.
The body was recovered at Patriot, Ind., about 11:00 a. m. Wednesday and identified by a relative.3
