Their daughter Jessie was listed as living with them.9 Joseph Mayhew, of Horton Twp., was the informant on the death registration of his wife, Marion Mayhew, who died on 25 September 1892.22
The following article appeared in the Renfrew, Ontario Renfrew Mercury, 6 August 1895 :
Executors’ Sale of Farm, Farm Stock and Implements

Under instruction from George Eady, Jr., and Elkanah Mayhew, Executors of the Estate of the late Joseph Mayhew, the undersigned will sell by Public Auction, on the premises in Horton, on MONDAY, AUGUST 19th, 1895 at Two o'clock, P.M.,
The Farm - containing 100 acres the east half of Lot. No. 5 in the Second Concussion of Horton.
Farm Stock and Implements. - 3 cows, 3 young Cattle, 1 Horse, 2 Pigs, Single Buggy, 1 Fanning Mill, 1 Plow, 1 Pair Harrows, a quantity of Hay, etc., etc.
Terms - The farm will be sold on easy terms to suit the Purchasers. The personal property will be Cash.
     W. N. Faichney, Auctioneer,
     Renfrew, August 6, 1895.23
Joseph Mayhew is referenced in my analysis of Peter Mayhew in 2000; According to the book "The Story of Renfrew,
" between 1840 and 1848, Charles, Joseph and Edward Mayhew were living between Thomson's Hill and the village of Renfrew, on the south side of the Creek. Peter Mayhew and Nulbeir Jourdain lived on the west side of the village. It is feasible that all four were brothers although I have not identified where Edward fits in, and since Peter married Sophie Jourdain it is again feasible that this is the same Peter Mayhew.
Assume Peter Mayo born about 1823, spouse of Sophia Jourdain is the same person as Peter Mayhew, born about 1823, who was a widower at the time of the 1881 census. Baptist Jordon was enumerated with his family. Both had a daughter Elizabeth born about 1873. Other children's names also contribute to this assumption.24

She immigrated circa 1846 to British North America from Scotland when she was 8. Note that the 1921 census gives her year of immigration as 1868, but this comes after the year of her marriage in Renfrew County, Ontario, so is incorrect.18
The following article appeared in the Renfrew, Ontario Renfrew Mercury, 26 March 1880 :
Mr. and Mrs Ira Mayhew and family of ten children also left this neighbourhood this week, to settle in their new home in the Nipissing district, which is also attracting a fair share of emigrants, who prefer the forest to the prairie lands. We are informed that Mr Mayhew was the first white child born in what is now the village of Renfrew - 51 years ago - so that it may fairly be said we have lost our oldest inhabitant:
- Mr William Airth being the next oldest resident born here.21

Ire and Margaret Mayhew appeared on the 1891 Canadian Census of RM of Oakland, Manitoba, enumerated 28 April 1891. Ire was described as a farmer and a Methodist. Their children, Joseph, James, John, Ira, Jane and Louise, were listed as living with them.11

Ira and Margaret Mayhew appeared on the 1901 Canadian Census of RM of Oakland, Manitoba, enumerated 31 March 1901, described as a farmer and a Methodist. Their children: John and Louise Marion, were listed as living with them.6

Margaret Hamilton Holliday was recorded as mother of the bride at the marriage of Lorne Daniel Swenerton and Louise Marion Mayhew on 15 June 1910.23
Margaret appeared in the 1921 Canadian Census of Vancouver, British Columbia, in the household of Joseph Edward Mayhew.12

The following obituary appeared in the newspaper the Renfrew Mercury published in Renfrew, Ontario 7 June 1895 :
Death of A Pioneer
The Mother of the First White Child Born in Renfrew Laid to Rest.

On Friday morning there peacefully entered into rest, at the home of her son, Mr. Elkanah Mayhew, Charlotte Honeywell, wife of the late Joseph Mayhew, sr., and one of the oldest settlers in this locality. The deceased was born in the township of Montague Lanark County, and was married to Mr. Mayhew when quite a young woman. They settled first in Nepean; but soon moved to the Fourth Chute in Renfrew County. Here they lived one winter. Then, some 69 years ago, the removed to the township of Horton, locating in that portion which is now the town of Renfrew, on the farm of which what is now Mr. Wm. Plaunt's was then a part On (sic) this farm, - the house being then about where the C.P.R. track now crosses Main street, - was born the second of the family, Ira, the first white child entitled to call Renfrew his native place. Shortly afterwards, Mr and Mrs Mayhew removed to what is now the Mackay farm, on the hillside between Thomsonville and the town. Here they brought up their family. Mr Mayhew died some fourteen years ago; and for the last nine years the widow lived with her son Elkanah. For five or six years she has been blind, but otherwise fairly well preserved. The last winter her health gave indication of failing. On Saturday, a large number of friends of the family followed to the grave the remains of one who was a veritable pioneer. There were only three other families settled in the locality when she and her husband took up their residence here.

- In the absence of Rev. Mr. Delong, at Conference, Mr. John Stevenson conducted the funeral services; Rev. Dr. Campbell also taking part.20

Renfrew, Dec. 30

A wedding of more than passing interest was solemnized at the home of Mrs. Charles Mayhew, Argyle street, at nine o-clock this evening, when her only daughter, Marion Edna, was given in marriage by her brother, George Mayhew, to Jefferies Kelrie, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Kelrie, of St. George, Ont. The bride, who was unattended, looked charming in a gown of powder blue georgette crepe, with gold trimmings and fold bandeau. Her shoes were of blonde satin, with hose to match, and she carried a shower bouquet of Ophelia roses and lily-of-the-valley. Miss Muriel Beamish played the wedding march.

The ceremony was performed by Rev. Gordon A. Slaco, of Trinity United Church. During the signing of the register Miss Ruby Lester sang "Love's Coronation." A dainty buffet luncheon was served, after which the guests were entertained with music. Miss Lester and Mr. J. C. Norton contributing several vocal selection.

Going away the bride wore a dress of cocoa brown satin crepe, seal coat, and powder blue faille hat.
