Bomber heroes in Germany are remembered
The souls of six Second World War airmen who disappeared on a bombing mission were laid to rest on Thursday.
By David Jarvis
Germans have erected a memorial to the crew of a Lancaster, which vanished returning from a night raid on October 6, 1944.

Relatives solved the mystery.

The memorial is in a German field after they discovered the plane crashed there and not in the North Sea as thought.

It is exceptional that the tribute was allowed.

A statute (sic) to RAF Bomber Command erected in Hyde Park in 2012 sparked a row between then mayor of London Boris Johnson and Helma Orosz, mayor of Dresden, wiped out by a 1945 blitz.

The memorial in Staatsforsten, near Cloppenburg, hopes to foster peace.

Julie Barton, 53, of Beddau, Wales, whose grandfather Flight Engineer Ronald Barton died in the crash, joined more than 50 locals at the unveiling, exactly 72 years on from that night.

She said: “An emotional, moving day. It was a lovely ceremony with music and speeches.

"The people of Cloppenburg have been wonderful. The deputy mayor said that memorials like this remind you of the need to work for peace and friendship. There’s such respect there for us and the crew. Everyone suffered in the war.”

PD214 left RAF Metheringham, Lincs and bombed Bremen.

The eight men were returning to base but crashed in Staatsforsten, 35 miles west.

They were Ronald Barton, 34; Flt Lt Douglas Stewart, 29; Australian trainee, Flt Lt John Colclough Barlow, 35, Rear Gunner Sergeant Ronald James Paul, 20, Flt Sgt George Bowering Kirby, 22; wireless man Gordon Stuart Grogan; Canadian pilot Clyde James Royal, 31 and Flt Sgt James Anthony Fell, 21.

Julie spotted a report of a Lancaster brought down over Staatsforsten in the RAF Historical Branch.

The Germans found two bodies, Flt Lt Barlow and Rear Gunner Sergeant Paul. Excavators found fuselage, burnt tyre, parachute silk and bullets.

Julie believes the missing are buried deeper.

At the unveiling was Hans Heurmann, in his eighties, who saw the wreckage aged nine.

Julie added: “Hans placed himself between me and Debbie and bowed his head.

"Hans knew my grandfather was just doing his job.

"On October 6, 1944, Lancaster PD214 set off from RAF Metheringham on a massive bombing raid on the German industrial city of Bremen but nothing was heard from the plane after take off. The International Red Cross reported the plane had crashed and that the Germans had recovered two bodies." In 1946, an RAF team exhumed the two bodies recovered by the Germans, but then the location was "lost" in the RAF archives, leaving the families to believe their loved ones had disappeared into the North Sea.
