     The following analysis is from my personal research and reflects my attempts to consolidate information from different sources.
This is not the John Sutherland whose obituary appears in the 08 Apr 1929 issue of the Star-Phoenix. That individual was a veteran of the Boer War, but no mention is made of WWI, or of Asquith.

The death of John L. Sutherland, a CN engineer from North Battleford, was reported in the 05 Jun 1936 Star-Phoenix. It was reported that he was a Veteran, but I have been unable to identify his service file.

There are 11 service files for John Sutherland from Saskatchewan, but noe resided near Asquith or Saskatoon.2,3,4

28 men by the name of Small are listed on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission web site who were Canadian and died in WWI. Of these, I have reviewed W. Small and W. D. Small and neither appears to be this man. In both cases, only their initials are given.2,3

     Joseph Beirnes died on 1 June 1942 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.2
     Joseph Beirnes was buried on 3 June 1942 at Ruthilda Cemetery, RM of Grandview No. 349, Saskatchewan, Canada.3,2
     Joseph Beirnes appeared on the 1881 Canadian Census of Cardwell & Watt Twps., Muskoka District, Ontario in the household of his parents, Thomas and Elizabeth Beirnes, listed as a farmer's son.1
     In 1899,Joseph moved from Ontario to Osler, Saskatchewan, Canada. In 1912, he moved to the Springwater district near Biggar.2 He retired in 1921, moving to Saskatoon.2
     The following obituary appeared in the newspaper the Star-Phoenix published in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan 4 June 1942:
BEIRNES
     FUNERAL SERVICES for Joseph Beirnes, age 79, of 533 Avenue E, south, who died Monday, June 1, were held Wednesday, June 3, at Ruthllda. The Rev. W. H. Found of Elim Tabernacle, Saskatoon, officiated. Interment in Ruthllda Cemetery. Survived by his widow; eons, Gordon at Ruthllda, Milton at Westbank, B.C, Roy at Summer land, B.C., Arnold at Westbank, B.C; daughters, Mrs. Bert Ismond. Young, Sask; Mrs. W, F. Johnston, Ruthilda; Mrs. N. E. Britton, Cut Knife. Pallbearers were pioneers of the Ruthilda district. Mr. Beirnes was born in Ontario, came west to Osier, Sask in 1899. He moved to Springwater In 1912 and retired in 1921, moving to Saskatoon. Many flowers were received from friends and relatives.4
