John Dohney Langsford1

M, #40551, b. 15 May 1900, d. 8 September 1947
Father*Thomas Langsford2
Mother*Annie Laura Taft2
Last Edited11 Oct 2021
He was born on 15 May 1900 at Agassis, British Columbia, Canada, according to BC Birth Registration 00-09-084308.3,2,4
John Dohney Langsford died on 8 September 1947 at Hamilton General Hospital, Hamilton, Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada, at age 47 according to Ontario Death Registration 028305. He was a mechanic with his own shop.5,1 The informant on his death registration was his wife.1
John Dohney Langsford was buried on 11 September 1947 at Woodland Cemetery, Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada.1,6
     Introductory Overview:
John Langsford of Sonningdale is not included in the Asquith and District Honour Roll for WWI.
Other comments:
John was farming in the Sonningdale district when he enlisted 21 Jun 1916. He gave his birth date as 15 May 1898 to make himself two years older. His service record was flagged with the notation "Not to be sent overseas until 19 years of age." However, after sending him to France based upon his declared age, a copy of his birth certificate was made available, showing he was 2 years younger, and thus still a minor. Did his parents "turn him in," or did he do it himself? He was returned to England and ultimately, back to Canada. He had several encounters with military discipline, which may be attributed to his being young, held in limbo until he came of age. In other words, he may have been bored and prone to taking liberties.
After the war, he moved around. In 1921 he went to the U.S., and even filed his intention to be naturalized. At some point, he returned to Canada and married in 1931. He may have been married a second time since on his 1947 death registration, his wife's maiden name is Lewis, rather than Melino as shown on his 1931 marriage registration.3,7

Canadian Military Service - WWI

John Langsford of Sonningdale, Saskatchewan began military service on 21 June 1916 at the age of 16 at North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada, joining the 232nd Battalion. He was an unmarried farmer with no previous military experience. He back dated his birthday by two years, but this was caught by the military in 1918 and corrected.. He was described as being 5' 4 1/4" with grey eyes, fair hair and a fresh complexion. He was assigned regimental number 1018511.3
On 17 April 1917, at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, he embarked with his unit on the "S. S. Northland" arriving at Liverpool on the 29th.8
On 21 September 1917, at Bramshott, Hampshire, England, he was sentenced to 84 days detention for: 1) escaping from confinement, 2) stealing goods the property of an officer, 3) willful injury to public property, 4) conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline. During his detention he was transferred to the 15th Reserve Battalion since he was considered to be 19, (but they were using his declared age, not his actual age.)9
On 28 February 1918, at France, he proceeded overseas (to France) for service with the 28th Battalion arriving at Etaples on the 1st Mar. He joined his unit on the 14th. On the 17th Apr he was transferred back to England because they had determined he was actually still a minor. His service file contains a certificate verifyng his 1900 birth date. It was issued Jan 11, 1918. He rejoined the "Saskatchewan Regiment Depot." He was in detention for about a week and then posted to the Young Soldiers Battalion. He was in trouble again on 5 Oct 1918 when was sentenced to 35 days detention for: 1) absent from fire picquet at 6 pm 28 Sep 1918, 2) absent without leave (later amended to HWL, but I am uncertain what this means) from 10 pm until apprehended at Milford at about 1 am 29 Sep 1918.10 Pte. John Langsford ended military service as part of general demobilization on 4 February 1919 at Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, after returning to Canada "for dispoal being a minor" on 28 Nov 1918 aboard the "S. S. Aquitania" It was noted at his related medical examination that he was missing the distal phalax of his left index finger. His enlistment medical had noted a "deformed left hand," apparently referring to this. Another medical report stated he lost this digit at the age of 4, but "had no difficulty in handling the rifle and performing full drill".
End of Military Service section.11

He declared the intention to become naturalized on 9 November 1921 at Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia, USA, in the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of Georgia. He had last resided in Weyburn, Saskatchewan before crossing the border by railroad at North Portal, North Dakota on 10 Jun 1921.4 He lived at Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, on 12 December 1928 at P.O. Box 53.10
     Research notes:
I have assumed John was married twice? His Ontario marriage registration shows he married Mary Jane Merino. His death registration was signed by his wife, Marie née Lewis, the informant.12
