Blanche was born premature at the home of her parents on Cook Rd. in Sheridan, NY. It was said that she was so small that her head would fit in a tea cup and she could fit in a cigar box. Just how much she weighed no one knew, but people drove for miles to see her. She was wrapped in cotton for two weeks before her mother dressed her and only through her mother's loving tender care did she live. She grew up on the farm on Cook Rd. She graduated from Dunkirk High School in 1913 and Buffalo General Hospital School of Nursing Feb 23, 1917. She joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and served at Camp Gordon, GA during WWI. On returning home, she was a surgical nurse at Buffalo General until she came home to marry Mayman Gilray. They built their home and greenhouses on Rt. 20 in Sheridan and lived there the rest of their lives. Blanche helped in the greenhouse during the busy season then did private duty nursing. After her husband's death in 1950, she ran the greenhouse until it was sold and then did general duty at Brooks Memorial Hospital from 1959 to 1968. she was a member of the Sheridan United Methodist Church, the Sheridan United Methodist Women, was past grand of the True Union Rebekah Lodge and a member of the Sheridan Garden and Variety Club. for many years an avid button collector, she was a member of the Buffalo Button Club, the New York State Button Society and the Pennsylvania State Button Society. - Marjorie (Gilray) Crosgrove.2
